ZETA recently co-hosted a highly impactful seminar with Chapter Zero Egypt in Cairo, led by Dr. Jan Haizmann, CEO of ZETA. The session focused on the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its potential consequences for Egyptian businesses. With approximately 20% of Egyptian exports to the EU covered by CBAM, the seminar provided valuable insights into the sectors most at risk, including aluminium, cement, iron & steel, and fertilizers.

Dr. Haizmann highlighted that Egypt is the 6th largest exporter of goods to the EU covered by CBAM, valued at approximately €37.2 billion (~$39.2 billion). Aluminium, which accounts for 79% of Egypt’s exports to the EU, is especially vulnerable. Other sectors, such as iron & steel and fertilizers, will need a more nuanced approach due to their complex supply chains and varying levels of exposure to carbon pricing regulations.

The seminar emphasized the urgency for Egyptian industries to act quickly in adapting to these new regulations. Dr. Haizmann encouraged businesses to begin carbon accounting and ensure their carbon footprints are verified for CBAM compliance by 2026. Establishing robust emissions reporting frameworks and enhancing carbon footprint transparency across supply chains were identified as essential steps for businesses looking to stay competitive in a decarbonized global market. The event stressed the importance of global cooperation to meet sustainability goals, noting that alignment with international standards will be key to maintaining competitiveness.

Additionally, the seminar explored how CBAM presents both challenges and opportunities. While it could increase costs for Egyptian exporters, it also offers a chance for businesses to innovate and align with global carbon regulations. Dr. Haizmann highlighted the critical role of private sector investment and commodity trade in navigating CBAM successfully, encouraging Egyptian businesses to engage with these mechanisms to turn challenges into growth opportunities.

The session concluded with a thought-provoking Q&A where attendees discussed practical strategies for preparing for CBAM and leveraging its potential benefits. ZETA expressed its gratitude to Chapter Zero Egypt for hosting the event and providing a platform for open dialogue on Egypt’s future in the global carbon-conscious economy. As CBAM expands and takes full effect in 2026, Egyptian industries are urged to act now to ensure they are ready for the changes ahead, ensuring resilience and a competitive edge in an evolving global market.
