Insights on Clean Hydrogen Standards at ADIPEC 2024

ZETA’s Secretary General, Jan Haizmann, attended the ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference 2024 Hydrogen Conference in Abu Dhabi from November 4-7. Joining industry leaders, he explored how low-carbon hydrogen can drive the global energy transition.

During the conference, Jan participated in a panel discussion titled "Setting the Standard for Clean Hydrogen," focusing on the critical role of certifications in building trust and scalability within the sector.

The panel delved into evolving global frameworks for clean hydrogen. When Dr. Carole Nakhle, CEO of Crystol Energy, raised the concept of “colorblind” hydrogen, Jan emphasized that while color labels (such as "green" or "blue") are not entirely wrong, they currently fragment limited liquidity in the market. He noted that as the market matures, these distinctions could evolve into diverse product markets with differentiated pricing.

Daria Nochevnik, Director of Policy & Partnerships at the Hydrogen Council, echoed the necessity for a unified global emissions standard for hydrogen production. She advocated for adopting ISO standards to streamline the processes of production, conditioning, and transport.

The panel also discussed COP28’s progress toward a unified certification framework for hydrogen. Jan highlighted the importance of international recognition, stating: “National standards are essential, but compliance markets need internationally fungible certificates.”

Drawing parallels to LNG's development, Jan noted that while today’s technology allows hydrogen markets to scale more rapidly, a unified certification system remains a critical component. He also underscored the need for flexible contracts with mechanisms to address regulatory and certification shifts, ensuring balanced risks for both buyers and sellers while encouraging investment.

Special thanks went to fellow panelists Wael Almazeedi of Avance Labs and Nikunj Gupta of ADNOC Group for their valuable contributions to this essential discussion.
