On Tuesday, May 28th, 2024, the Clean Energy Business Council organized a networking event hosted by Pinsent Masons, titled "Carbon Markets: Driving Sustainable Change in MENA." This event featured a panel discussion on the role of carbon markets in the MENA region's green transition, with contributions from Jan Haizmann, Secretary General of ZETA (Zero Emissions Traders Alliance), Xavier Pye from ACX (AirCarbon Exchange), and Ahmed Samir Elbermbali from Bureau Veritas Group.
The forum delved into the emerging role of carbon markets in accelerating the MENA region's transition to a sustainable economy. Expert-led discussions addressed both the opportunities and challenges associated with carbon trading, providing valuable insights for stakeholders across environmental and economic sectors.
Jan Haizmann highlighted the significant potential for a carbon market within the GCC. He pointed out that a mandatory Emissions Trading System (ETS) could help meet climate targets but stressed the importance of industry consultation for its effectiveness. Haizmann emphasized the need for regional cooperation over isolated systems and suggested learning from the experiences of other regions.
At ZETA, we are dedicated to fostering dialogue and expertise in this crucial area. We understand the importance of leveraging collective experience from other regions to develop a robust carbon market in MENA.
We extend our gratitude to the Clean Energy Business Council MENA for hosting such an insightful discussion, and to Gurmeet K., Partner at Pinsent Masons, for her effective moderation.
